State of Palestine: Worshippers hold Orthodox Christmas mass at Gaza church

Dozens of Palestinian Orthodox Christians held their annual Christmas prayers at the Church of St. Porphyrius in Gaza City on Friday.

The congregation gathered for the mass before candles were lit and passages read from the Bible.
“We hope that it will be a happy Eid for all our Palestinian people, and we hope that it will be a new year filled with happiness, stability, and just and comprehensive peace on the Palestinian territories, and a new and successful start for our Palestinian national and political programme,” said worshipper Musa Ayyad.

The church is said to be the only Orthodox house of worship in Gaza, founded in 407 AD. The population of Christians in the Gaza Strip has been falling due to mass migration out of the territory.

Christ came with a message of love and peace. He said ‘I am peace, and I give you my peace, and I entrust you with peace’ and here we are exchanging peace among the Arab peoples.”

SOT, Majed AlTarazi, Worshipper (Arabic): “Our message, of course, is a message of peace and love to all the world. We say to you every year and you are fine. God willing, next year will be a better year and be more beautiful, and all misfortunes will go away from all peoples in the whole world, without exception, and peace be upon everyone.”
