Leaders of the Free Democrats (FDP) expressed satisfaction regarding Frank-Walter Steinmeier’s candidacy as Federal President in Berlin, Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the ballot, Christian Lindner stated “In his first term in office, Frank-Walter Steinmeier made a particularly valuable contribution to the cohesion of our country whenever attacks on liberal democracy in Germany were involved”, adding “He stands for the free democratic basic order. He stands for the European orientation of our country. He also stands for the long lines of our country’s transatlantic partnership.”

Christian Duerr supported Lindner, saying “We’re very pleased that the Social Democrats, the Green Party and Christian Democrats also supported this proposal.”

The comments were followed by a single ballot by the National Assembly, in which Steinmeier was unanimously re-elected to serve as Germany’s president for another 4-year term.
