A quarantine facility in Geneina, West Darfur has been transformed into a camp for internally displaced persons of the region as seen on Monday.

Residents in the camp spoke of poor living conditions and a lack of sanitation at the site.

“There are no houses or tents here. One bathroom is being used by 20 to 30 people,” said Abdul Karim Jumaa, a displaced person.

Attacks at other camps within West Darfur have reportedly forced many internally displaced people to flee once more, as displacement centres became overcrowded by new arrivals amid violence between rival tribes.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Abdul Karim Jumaa, Displaced person (Arabic): “I came here because of the war, this war killed us. My arm was broken here after they beat me, and I came here for treatment.”

SOT, Abdul Karim Jumaa, Displaced person (Arabic): “There are no houses or tents here. One bathroom is being used by 20 to 30 people, my wife stands in front of the bathroom as I enter, then I go out and she enters and so on, and the smell is very bad.”

SOT, Fadila Mohammed, Displaced person (Arabic): “Our suffering began in 2003 and continues to 2021. We were killed, raped and burned. We have not been able to find comfort until the present day. Even securing food here is very difficult. A family regardless of one or ten people receives the same ration of 14 pounds. The ration can suffice a family with one child for twenty days, but will last for only three days for a family with 10 children. The child is searching, the mother is searching and the father is searching (for a living). Our daughters who work in washing clothes in the city are being raped.”

SOT, Zainab Mamoud, Displaced person (Arabic): “When a woman is pregnant, she does not receive the care or the attention she needs from any side, and this is just an example of the situation of women here. When a woman is about to give birth, or when she is in the first or last months of pregnancy, there is usually a follow-up of her health condition, but women here do not receive care from any side. This is part of what women suffer here, and we need help with this matter.”

SOT, Zainab Mamoud, Displaced person (Arabic): “We were not vaccinated against the Coronavirus. Personally, I would like to receive the vaccination, but I did not receive it, as there is no one who cares about us here.”
Journalist: “Do you have any cases of the virus here?”
Zainab Mamoud, Displaced person (Arabic): “I don’t think we have cases here, but I’m not sure about that. I could have answered you if there were parties that care about us and can diagnose the cases, but no one cares about us.”
