Russian minister of foreign affairs Sergei Lavrov said that US missiles may soon appear on the European territory. The comment came during a summit of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Stockholm on Thursday.
“US medium-range missiles are about to appear on European territory. The nightmarish scenario of a military confrontation that our continent experienced after the well-known NATO double solution is returning,” Lavrov stated during a speech. He added that “Ukraine is being pumped up militarily.”
“We will be submitting proposals in the near future, we expect them to be seriously considered on the merits, without excuses, and we think the OSCE can play a very useful role here,” the Russian minister of foreign affairs said quoting Putin.
Lavrov also discussed NATO deploying forces in the immediate vicinity of areas that are strategically important for Russian’s safety, commenting on the situation describing it as “categorically unacceptable.”
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs (Russian): “On the contrary, the Alliance’s military infrastructure is irresponsibly moving closer to Russia’s borders. Missile defense systems that could be used as strike systems are deployed in Romania and Poland. US medium-range missiles are about to appear on European territory. The nightmarish scenario of a military confrontation that our continent experienced after the well-known NATO double solution is returning. Europe is keeping silent. Ukraine is being pumped up militarily, which fuels Kyiv’s mood to sabotage the Minsk agreements and fuels the illusion that the conflict can be resolved by force.”
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs (Russian): “Those who habitually repeat the Bucharest talking points and claim that third countries have no right to express their position on NATO enlargement are playing with fire. I am convinced that they are not unaware of that. I want to make it very clear, turning our neighbouring countries into a bridgehead for confrontation with Russia, deploying NATO forces in the immediate vicinity of areas that are strategically important for our safety, is categorically unacceptable.”
SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs (Russian): “President Putin, speaking at the credentials ceremony in the Kremlin yesterday, stressed, and I quote: We are not demanding any special conditions for ourselves. We understand that any agreement must necessarily take into account both the interests of Russia and those of all Euro-Atlantic countries. A calm, stable situation must be ensured for all and it is necessary for all without exception. He also stressed the following: In the dialogue with the United States and its allies, we will insist on working out specific agreements that rule out any further NATO advances eastwards and the deployment of weapon systems that threaten us in close proximity to Russian territory. We will be submitting proposals in the near future, we expect them to be seriously considered on the merits, without excuses, and we think the OSCE can play a very useful role here.”
