Sweden’s new Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson delivered her maiden policy statement to parliament in Stockholm on Tuesday. Her address came a day after she was voted in as prime minister for a second time by lawmakers.

Among the issues addressed by Andersson was the topic of gangs and the poverty which gives rise to them.

“Much broader efforts are needed to break the segregation that leads to poverty and hopelessness and fuels gang crime. Every minister in the government that takes office today will be tasked, within their area of responsibility and with the support of the relevant government agencies, with leaving no stone unturned in bringing an end to gang crime and segregation,“ she said.

Andersson also presented her new cabinet on Tuesday.

Andersson, who has become Sweden’s first female prime minister, was voted into the position for the first time last week. However she was forced to resign soon after the collapse of her coalition following defeat in a parliamentary budget vote.

The Social Democratic Party leader and former finance minister once again secured the vote by a narrow margin on Monday.

Andersson is now set to lead a single-party minority government through to general elections in September next year.

It is society’s most fundamental expression of the equal value of all people. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the recognition of this right. In 1921, for the first time in Sweden women and men alike were able to exercise universal and equal suffrage in elections to the Riksdag. This right cannot be taken for granted. It must be reinforced again and again by each successive generation.”
