Voters hit the polls in Bern on Sunday to vote in a referendum on animal testing.
If passed, Switzerland would have become the World’s first country to ban animal testing outright.
“When I saw the title, I thought it sounded good and was already at a yes. Then I saw that it goes extremely far. A lot more would not be possible. The development regarding COVID vaccines would not have been possible in this way in such a short time,” commented one voter.
“Then I also looked at what the parties were saying about it, and it seemed to me that there was something wrong. This is too blatant. Of course I don’t want poor monkeys to be tortured, but the Swiss animal protection law is very good and depending on how many yes votes come, more attention will be paid to it. But I think it goes much too far,” added the voter.
According to projections by Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF), 79 per cent were set to vote against the animal testing ban initiative.
Neither the Federal Council nor parliament support the initiative, with no major party supporting the initiative either.
“I myself voted no, because it needs a distinction and not a general ban, because it would prevent many medically needed and modern innovations,” said another voter.
The initiative for a ban on animal and human experimentation also failed to win a majority in the cantons. All cantons counted by Sunday afternoon had rejected the proposal.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Voter (Swiss German): “I voted no to the initiative for a ban on animals and human rights and I assume that the initiative will be rejected because all parties were against it. I myself voted no, because it needs a distinction and not a general ban, because it would prevent many medically needed and modern innovations.”
