Syria: Storm destroys greenhouses in Tartous region

Several greenhouses were destroyed by a storm hitting the Tartous countryside on Saturday.
The storm that hit several farms in the region caused significant damage to the protected crops.
As reported by the Natural Disaster Mitigation Fund in the Directorate of Agriculture for the Tartous district, preliminary statistics show that 35 greenhouses planted with cucumbers and beans were severely damaged.
“The storm came overnight, destroyed the greenhouses, and passed. All the people posting on Facebook are saying a kilogram of cucumbers costs 500 Syrian pounds (€0.89); what a pity. All the produce is destroyed over there,” said local farmer Aahd Ibrahim.
“Who am I supposed to complain to, a general manager? These plastics covers cost millions, so if the situation stays the same, then I will never grow anything. No one thinks about the farmer,” he added.
Prices for vegetables and fruits at the local markets have since gone up.
Affected farmers have submitted requests for damage compensation with the Disaster Mitigation Fund of the Ministry of Agriculture.

SOT, Kefah Diab, Farmer (Arabic): “Because it’s a tropical storm, you do not know what are the protocols. You don’t know when it will appear or come from. Some wind accumulates and then it blows over, causing a lot of damage. We cannot interfere in nature. We ask for a bit of sympathy because we are unable to pay our debts this season. I’m farming just to barely get by and pay my debt.”

SOT, Mohamed El Aly, Local Resident (Arabic): “The prices have increased a lot since the storms. Almost anything’s price shot up, nothing is stable or decreased. Tomatoes now cost 2,500 Syrian Liras (€4.45), Parsley costs 500 (€0.89) . A kilo of onions cost 2,000 pounds (€3.56), what can you buy? You never know what to buy.”
