Syria: Thousands of colourful revellers attend Marmarita's annual carnival

Thousands of people attended the annual carnival in the village of Marmarita, in northwestern Syria, on Saturday.

Participants could be seen wearing colourful costumes featuring traditional characters - and not so traditional like former US President Donald Trump -, as the parade went down the streets, where different kinds of sculptures of different sizes were on display.

The carnival “was very simple in the beginning before it began to develop over time in terms of ideas and fashion,” said Ibtisam Khouri, a member of the group of revellers which, according to her, started this tradition 44 years ago.

Khouri added that the carnival started gaining reputation “not only in of Marmarita, but also became famous in the valley area”, as visitors from other cities started to “visit Marmarita to enjoy its beautiful nature and attend the carnival”.

“It belongs to our town’s heritage, we all hold on to it and deeply love it. We work together and share small and huge ideas. So, we are thrilled to start with the carnival,” young participant Tereza Yazaji said.

Marmarita’s Carnival is organised in August every year on the occasion of the Dormition of the Mother of God.

I was a member of the group which initiated the festival concept, which was very simple in the beginning, before it began to develop over time in terms of ideas and fashion. Visitors started to flock to our area from Homs, Damascus and all governorates to visit Marmarita, to enjoy its beautiful nature and attend the carnival.”

And frankly, we were not disappointed with the carnival, the atmosphere, the participants and the dancing made it very interesting, we expected the festival to be beautiful, and we were not disappointed”
