Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday accused Ukraine of creating hysteria around the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and slammed Kiev for “begging for something” from the West.

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “Our Ukrainian friends are constantly trying to bring this topic to the level of such hysteria. It is their habit, it has become a rule - begging for something from the West. ‘Here is Nord Stream 2: stop it! And if you can’t stop, then give us money as compensation. Let’s put it down on paper, that if the Russians do something with Nord Stream 2 when it functions, then you will immediately do something to the Russians in return. And let us into NATO, the European Union, we have been ready for a long time, there is no need to come up with political excuses.’ They beg and beg. The country should probably still have some dignity of its own. The Ukrainian people with a rich history deserve to be a creator, not a beggar with a constantly outstretched hand. Therefore, we, as you know, have completed all the work [on Nord Stream 2], now the process of obtaining the necessary permits from the German regulator is underway. The process, as it turns out, under German law is slow, in my opinion, four months, the beginning of 2022 is indicated. I have no doubt that attempts to attack this gas pipeline will continue. And, although the minority opposes it so strongly, this minority is aggressive. These are, first of all, the Balts, Poland, for obvious reasons, and several other European Union countries, which are simply guided by their anti-Russian motives.”

SOT, Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “The Taliban, of course, have not been recognised by any country yet. Everyone says that it is necessary to have contacts with them on current issues, primarily on security issues, issues of respect for the rights of citizens, issues of ensuring the normal functioning of diplomatic missions, but no one is in a hurry to officially recognise the Taliban. We do not impose any conditions on them. The Taliban themselves declared their goals, including their commitment to the further fight against terrorism, fight against drug trafficking, assured everyone else that they will do everything to ensure that no threats emanate from the territory of Afghanistan for neighbouring countries, and that they have no intention to destabilise neighbouring countries, and that they will form an inclusive government that reflects the full spectrum of Afghan society - political, ethnic, confessional balance. We supported, like the overwhelming majority of countries in the world, we welcomed this approach, and now we are watching how it will be implemented. Of course, too little time has passed to make final conclusions, at this stage we maintain contacts with the Taliban, primarily on issues related to removing any risks for our Central Asian neighbours.”

SOT Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister (Russian): “The facts [transmitted by the American ambassador] concerned the refusal of a number of Western Internet platforms to remove prohibited content. Specific facts were passed on to the American ambassador, he took this document as information that he promised to verify. To tell you the truth, he said that they did not have any information that someone was violating Russian law, but the information was passed on to him, they are quite serious. That’s all, in fact. We are waiting for an answer from our American colleagues why this is happening. At some stage, they stated that Internet companies and resources are independent and do not obey the state, but they must obey the law, the law of the Russian Federation. And we have reason to believe that the American state is also, in general, not entirely helpless in this specific issue.”
