Local activists decried the living conditions of hundreds of migrants after French police dismantled a camp in Grande-Synthe, near Dunkirk, as seen on Friday.

“For them, it’s very sad at the moment because the only place you can relax is when you are in your tent, you can speak with your family, but at the moment they don’t know where to go,” said Dorothy, a volunteer who helps displaced people in the area.

On Tuesday, police removed a large illegal camp in Northern France, where nearly one thousand migrants were stranded hoping to break through the UK border. Migrants are hiding in the woods, while a new camp is reportedly being set up with their remaining belongings.

SOT, Dorothy, Volunteer: “For the moment, it’s a moment they come here for food so then you see everybody, or most of the people here because now they lost their place to sleep and everything so they are hiding somewhere but when the food is coming they are coming altogether.”

SOT, Dorothy, Volunteer: “You have some people who sleep there, there are not many, a few, but maybe they are in the woods, one here one there. For them, it’s very sad at the moment because the only place you can relax is when you are in your tent, you can speak with your family, but at the moment they don’t know where to go.”
