Three months ago, when, after months of preparations, Russia’s vast and well-supplied army crossed the border into Ukraine, few thought that this would be the result.

Although the shelling and bloodshed continues across the Eastern European nation, the story is not one of total annihilation by Putin’s army.

Instead, the hoped-for swift toppling of the Ukrainian government was not forthcoming, and the Kremlin was forced to abandon plans to take the capital, Kyiv.

The bulk of the conflict is now taking place in the east, where war has raged between Ukraine and the separatist Donbas region for almost a decade.
