Bulgarian and Greek tourists flocked to the border city of Edirne for shopping as the Turkish lira sinks, on Friday.

One US dollar is now equivalent to more than 16 Turkish liras, with one euro being more than 18, as the Turkish currency hits a new low with the dollar, in turn, doubling in value against the lira in 2021.
“Because their euros gain value, they are coming here, it is more logical, more attractive for them. I don’t know how good it is for us but it is good for them in general,” said one seller.

Another local added that Turks in turn “cannot buy so much, foreigners from Bulgaria, from Greece do more shopping. Because Turkish lira has melted, our money has lost its value, our purchasing power has decreased.”

SOT, Local (Turkish): “The market is very beautiful but there is no possibility for purchase, if I was Bulgarian or Greek, yes I could buy but the prices are a little high now.”
