Turkey: Istanbul activists protest sentence to woman who killed abuser husband

Women’s rights activists rallied in the Istanbul district of Kadikoy on Friday to protest the 15-year jail sentence for Cilem Dogan, a woman who killed her husband in alleged self-defence as she was attempting to protect herself during another episode of abuse and violence in 2015.
“If Cilem had not killed the man who abused her, she would have died herself. Because she survived, because she defended her life, the male State wants to imprison Cilem,” a feminist platform activist Hivda Selen stressed during her speech at the rally.
On March 22, Turkey officially withdrew from the Istanbul Convention, saying that the international agreement aimed to protect women against femicides and abuse, is incompatible with the country’s values as according to official Ankara, it promotes homosexuality. Since then, at least 285 women in Turkey became victims of femicide.
