Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said further discussions are needed before deciding on a Taliban request for Turkey to protect and operate Kabul airport. Erdogan was speaking at a press conference at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul on Friday.

“The first of our meetings was held there with the first meeting about the Taliban, a meeting that lasted 3.5 hours, under the supervision of our embassy. In the process after that, we will have the opportunity to have such discussions here again if necessary,” Erdogan said. “With such negotiations, we strive to carry out the process in a healthy way. What are their expectations, what is our expectation, you will do all this by discussing.”

In a statement on Friday, Erdogan condemned the attack at Kabul airport which killed over 90 people including 13 US servicemen on Thursday.

SOT, Journalist asking question (Turkish): “Is there still contact with the Taliban? What will Turkey’s roadmap on Afghanistan be next? There is speculation that Turkish companies will also step in regarding the operation of the airport, and finally; There is a reaction in the Turkish public about the talks with the Taliban, not to be discussed, what would you say about this?” *LOOSE TRANSLATION AT SOURCE*

SOT, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (Turkish): “Dear friends, of course, I don’t know who’s criticising how and in what way. Everyone has the right to criticise, anyone can make any criticism they want. And we can’t afford to ask anyone’s permission to negotiate with whom, where, when, or what kind of negotiations. The first of our meetings was held there with the first meeting about the Taliban, a meeting that lasted 3.5 hours, under the supervision of our embassy. In the process after that, we will have the opportunity to have such discussions here again if necessary. With such negotiations, we strive to carry out the process in a healthy way. What are their expectations, what is our expectation, you will do all this by discussing it. It’s impossible to do these things without a meeting. In this respect, if you say diplomacy, of course you have to tell these people, what is diplomacy, friend? That’s diplomacy. Who’s going to do this in the first place? Foreign Affairs conducts, foreign affairs representatives conduct, politicians conduct. That’s what we do. Of course, right now, our friends are determined to do so.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey (Turkish): “What was the question that just came in? Are you going to talk to the Taliban? I’ll see you if I have to. But right now, once the Taliban, they have proposals to operate Kabul airport. Who? Us. He says we’ll provide security, you build the business. We don’t even have a decision on that yet. Because there’s any kind of death and so on. Seventy-two people died in yesterday’s incident, and if our name is mentioned, there’s the Republic of Turliye, or it operates the military air field there, it operates the civilian airport, but seventy-two people are killed, and if we get involved, we can’t explain it.” *LOOSE TRANSLATION AT SOURCE*
