Rescue operations were underway in Turkey’s coastal town of Bozkurt, Monday, after flash floods hit Black Sea provinces last week claiming the lives of at least 77 people, with 47 still missing.
“It is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like it,” said Sinan Kose, a resident.
Just two weeks after authorities announced that forest fires ravaging the southern coastal regions had been brought under control, severe flooding struck far inland.
“Everyone was watching the sea,” said Metin Alacali, another resident. “There were kids in the park, the kids could not escape,” he added.
Some 8,000 personnel were involved in rescue and assitant operations.

TRANSLATIONS:

SOT, Sinan Kose, Resident (Turkish): “It started with heavy rain, and then the police started warning. The power was out at the time. Get your cars up, we thought the work machines would work. He is going to throw down the trees. All of a sudden, I saw the bridge collapse. My son and I took refuge across the street. We have done a lot of damage. There are no casualties, thank God we’re praying to him. It just came out of nowhere. It is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like it.”

SOT, Metin Alacali, Resident (Turkish): “We were sitting in the coffee shop and the friends said he was going to swallow Bozkurt. That’s when my friends and I got up from the coffee shop and went down to the square. We’re tall for tea, and when I saw the tea size go up, I came to my house. There were maybe 100 or 150 people the size of sea. Everyone was watching the sea. There were kids in the park, the kids could not escape. We told him hes exploded tea will multiply they said he will swallow Bozkurt. I came home, my kids were home. I went up to the balcony and saw the vehicles going in the water. I saw a life market. I took my family and my kids. I was just getting caught in the flood. We left in two minutes.”
