Following the call of the Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions (KESK), thousands of workers came together in Izmir on Saturday to protest against the rising cost of living as the lira continues to depreciate against the dollar.
KESK initiated two rallies, one in Izmir and one in the southern city of Diyarbakir, under the slogan ‘Shoulder to Shoulder for a Humane Life, Labour and the People’s Budget.’
With flags and banners, unions, non-governmental organisations and political party representatives from, among others, the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) took part in the demonstration that was also heavily attended by workers from the surrounding provinces.
Before the protest in Gundogru Square, workers gathered in Cumhuriyet Square and marched together to the rally site.
The basic demands at the demonstration reportedly were to end what unions see as tax injustice for employees in the public sector, as well as to rationalise calculations of civil servant salaries, and reinstate laid-off employees immediately, as well as to guarantee a basic income that enables a decent life.
Labour unions and workers groups are currently protesting government measures across the country amid the continued fall of the Lira and spiking inflation rates.
The Turkish president on Friday announced an increase in the national minimum wage of 50 percent starting in the new year in a bid to help offset spiking inflation numbers.
