UAE: Expo 2020 Dubai confirms 3 worker deaths during pavilions construction

Speaking at a daily briefing at the media center, Dubai’s Expo 2020 Senior Vice President Communications Sconaid McGeachin expressed her regrets for ‘not accurate’ initial numbers provided before. McGeachin added that there had been registered three more fatal cases among workers for COVID-19 infection during the pandemic.
Expo 2020 top spokesperson also informed the press there had been 72 serious injuries so far among workers. She reassured that organisers of the World Expo were taking the matter of worker welfare ‘extremely seriously’ and that they would continue to communicate about it with the press and the public as they had done in the past.
Previously the Expo 2020 Dubai offered conflicting figures on workers’ casualties on site during the construction of the fair, initially reporting five and then changing the scores to three. In a statement on Saturday, published via Tawassul online information platform, Expo apologised and described the initial data as an ‘inaccuracy.’
Organisers of the Word fair in Dubai have faced sharp criticism over worker conditions during the construction. The European Parliament urged nations not to take part in Expo 2020 for what it called the Emirates’ “inhumane practices against foreign workers.”
The 35th World Fair kicked off under the theme ‘Connecting minds, creating the future’ in Dubai on October 1, 2021 and will run for six months until March 31, 2022. Expo 2020 Dubai has become the first world expo held in the Middle East. It is hosting 192 countries as well as international organisations and companies, that present their ideas, innovations and technologies.​
