COP26 delegates implored world leaders to abide by the climate change guidelines, as the conference drew to a close, in Glasgow on Saturday.
COP President Alok Sharma said the conference would be briefly adjorned “to enable the finalisation of documents.”
Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans urged delegates to consider what the world would look like in 2030 if the 1.5 degrees Celsius limit is not kept.
“Think, about one person in your life, one person only, that will still be around in 2030, and how that person will live if we do not stick to the 1.5 degrees here today. And of course we all have our national interest and of course the are many issues that need to looked at later. And I fully understand when developing nations say there should be more finances on the table. And yes we’re only at the beginning of what we need to do on loss and damage. And yes we’re only at the beginning of adaptation finance and everything that needs to be done but for heavens sake don’t kill this moment,” he said.
“Embrace this text so we can bring hopes to the hearts of our children and grandchildren,” Timmermans added.

SOT, Alok Sharma, COP President: “So friends, we have reached a critical juncture where we must come together and bring our hard work to a successful conclusion. You’re all skilled negotiators and you’re committed champions of your national interests. And I respect that and of course we are at that stage of the negotiations where you and your delegations may be asking yourselves whether you can leverage this moment to deliver more for your country, for your region or your group.”
SOT, Alok Sharma, COP President: “As I said at the start of this conference, we will succeed or fail as one. So, I propose that we will shortly adjourn this informal plenary to enable the finalisation of documents, and that we meet again this afternoon for the final closing plenaries of the COP, the CMP (Parties to the Kyoto Protocol) and the CMA (Parties to the Paris Agreement).”
SOT, Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of European Commission: “But I want all of us here, every single one of you to just for a minute to think, about one person in your life, one person only, that will still be around in 2030, and how that person will live if we do not stick to the 1.5 degrees here today. And of course we all have our national interest and of course the are many issues that need to looked at later. And I fully understand when developing nations say there should be more finances on the table. And yes we’re only at the beginning of what we need to do on loss and damage. And yes we’re only at the beginning of adaptation finance and everything that needs to be done, absolutely but for heavens sake don’t kill this moment.”
SOT, Frans Timmermans, Vice-President of the European Commission: “I have a firm belief that the text that’s on the table now reflects perfectly well this respect shown by the presidency and at the same time allows us to act with the urgency that is essential for our survival, I please implore you, please embrace this text so we can bring hopes to the hearts of our children and grandchildren.”
