UK: EU nations 'all together' to prevent Russia’s threat to Ukraine - Borrell

Josep Borrell, the highest ranking EU diplomat on foreign affairs and security, spoke out in support of Ukraine after the G7 summit in Liverpool on Saturday.

Borrell, who is in Liverpool for the two day summit, explained the current situation with Russia and Ukraine. “The big issue has been the situation in the eastern border of Europe in Ukraine, where Russia’s amassing troops. This represents a threat and admitting today all of us have been united in standing behind Ukraine and support their sovereignty and territorial integrity,” He said.

“We are in the deterrent mode to move Russia to understand that anything that could represent an attack to Ukraine would have a high price and we are there supporting Ukraine all together,” the top ranking EU official continued.

Borrell also briefly mentioned relations with China, saying “China represented a challenge, a strategic and ideological challenge.” Borrell also stated that precautions would need to be taken to ensure the trade route in the South China Sea remains secure.

The summit is taking place in Liverpool Saturday and Sunday and is hosting foreign ministers from all G7 countries. Germany’s new foreign minister Annalena Baerbock is in attendance.
