'We are witnessing instability and conflicts' - EU Foreign Policy chief Borrell on Belarus border

EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell gave a speech regarding the crisis at the Belarus-Poland border at a press conference in Brussels on Tuesday.

“The overall view is that we are witnessing instability, conflicts, transnational, transitional threats that impact our security and certainly using hybrid tactics as we see today at the border with Belarus. Something that some months ago was even difficult to imagine,” stated Borrell.

“Belarus is not a migration crisis. And we must respond to it with every possible tool to our disposal,” he went on to say.

“Migrants, human beings picked up by plane several thousands of kilometres far away have been converted into weapons and to sent to the borders as a new tool for destabilisation,” he added.

According to Borrell, the ‘classic distinction between war and peace’ is becoming blurred, so that the EU needs a new approach, which he and the foreign ministers of the member states developed in the form of a ‘Strategic Compass for Security and Defense’ paper.

The compass is intended to give the EU the ability to act quickly, based on partnership, especially with NATO, and investment in defence and technologies, in order to react to the new threats in a coordinated, coherent and effective way, according to Borrell.

With regard to the situation on the Ukrainian border, where Russian troops were recently stationed, Borrell said that Ukraine can be sure of receiving political and diplomatic, economic and financial support from the EU.
