UK: Londoners react as petrol stations reduce capacity amid shortage

London residents react to reduced capacity at filling stations, in London on Tuesday. The Park Royal petrol station, where this footage was captured has shortened its operating hours from a 24-hour service to only opening between 04:00 and 06:00 in the morning (03:00 and 05:00 GMT).
“[The crisis is] definitely man-made or we kind of panicked into it. There was a problem, yes. Everybody knew we had a shortage of drivers but then again we haven’t helped ourselves,” Londoner, Navneesh said.
“We are used to having everything for yesterday, not for today or tomorrow and I think this is the problem with people. Not with the petrol.” she said.
A lack of lorry drivers forced the oil company BP to close several of its locations across the United Kingdom, prompting many to stock up on fuel.
On Saturday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans for a temporary visa scheme to ease entry by foreign lorry drivers into the UK, set to run until Christmas of this year.

SOT, Binita, Local: “It’s affecting me in a way where, the traffic is create unnecessarily. Wherever we go it takes ever so long to travel, even in train and just a short distance from school. The school run is taking ever so long to do that.”

SOT, Navneesh, Local: “Definitely man-made or we kind of panicked into it. There was a problem, yes. Everybody knew, we had a shortage of drivers but then again we haven’t helped ourselves. People, we’ve seen the long queues outside the petrol station, and chances are there will be people who are not even using or don’t need to use that much fuel literally, in a week or so everybody has filled up their tanks and still travel to their work with the public transport, buses and trains but then everything adds up so we got a shortage now.”

SOT, Ela, Local: “I think everything is over the top, because the problem we have got for only two days up to now. And it’s not a big problem but everybody must have full tank of fuel, they have something in reserve at home, and it’s not problem. We are used to having everything for yesterday, not for today or tomorrow and I think this is the problem with people. Not with the petrol.”

SOT, Ela, Local: “Consumption is very high and expectation is very high, and you know I think people must think differently, after a pandemic. I think we learn something but you can see not everybody. “

SOT, Oli, Local: “So it doesn’t make any sense, it’s like, although this is a state of emergency it should not be a state of emergency. We’ve got issues, there’s an issue with lorry drivers, so there should always be a plan but in this there’s no plan b, and this is my problem. It’s like, there’s always, Britain seems to be in a situation where they don’t prepare for the worst, this is how I feel. They never prepare for the worst, so, if you don’t prepare for the worst, what is it that you’re doing, you’re leaving plan a to work itself out, then your strategising plan b as it comes along. So it doesn’t instil confidence in the government because, if there’s a disaster or an issue. You don’t actually have a plan, you’re making plans as you go along and then you’re forgetting the fact that there has to be continuity, business continuity is being affected right now that there is no plan b.
