UK: Londoners react to COVID restrictions being lifted on "Freedom Day"

Londoners shared their thoughts on the UK government’s decision to ease most legal restrictions on social contact in England on Monday.

July 19th is being touted as ‘Freedom Day’ in the UK as there are now no limits on how many people can meet or attend events. Furthermore, face coverings will be recommended in some places such as public transport, but no longer required by law.

“It’s a good thing for lots of people to be honest, including myself. There is a point, we’re free to move around to probably go shopping, and everything. But the virus is still out there. And that’s why im still carrying my shield. Official shield. I can’t do without that. Plus I work in healthcare. I advise people, seriously to still protect themselves in crowded areas, because this virus is still out there,” noted one local resident.

English nightclubs reopened at midnight and table service will no longer be necessary in pubs and restaurants.

“I think it’s about common sense really. And I know that’s easy to say and we’re supposed to respect each other. Uhm, but I think with that people have to be trusted. And I think, you know like coming in today, on the train. It was a fairly empty carriage, there were four other people in the carriage and we put masks on and I think that’s about respect for each other, you know. And then when three of them got off, I took my mask off. So it’s one of those things,” explained a local resident during an interview.

The prime minister, chancellor and the health secretary are currently self-isolating, and there are more warning that COVID cases may surge in the UK.
