Ministers attended Downing Street after the announcement that the Met Police will investigate alleged parties held at Number 10 during lockdown, Tuesday.

Johnson faces growing calls to resign over a birthday party that was held for the prime minister in Downing Street during the first COVID-19 lockdown, on June 19, 2020, and revelations that he attended an apparent garden drinks party at Downing Street on May 20, 2020, which allegedly breached COVID-19 rules at the time.

Civil servant Sue Gray’s ongoing inquiry into the scandal could be published in the coming days, while the Met police investigation is still ongoing. The police haven’t said which gatherings precisely they will be investigating. Johnson via his spokesperson has said he does not believe he broke the law.

Jacob Rees-Mogg MP defended Johnson outside Number 10, saying: “the leadership of Boris Johnson this country has had has been so brilliant. He’s got us through this incredibly difficult period, and he’s got all the big decisions right. We have opened up faster than any other European country thanks to the prime minister.”

Most COVID restrictions are lifted in England this week, including the mask mandate, as announced by Johnson last week.
