Crowds of protesters gathered outside Russia Today’s office in London on Monday, accusing the organisation and the Russian government of spreading disinformation about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Participants held banners stating ‘Russia hands off Ukraine,’ with one sign depicting Russian President Vladimir Putin holding nukes, with a moustache similar to Adolf Hitler’s.
“The protest is about Putin, his aggression, invasion, and occupation of Ukraine, and his potential full-scale invasion which he’s threatening to do, and nobody knows whether he’s going to do it or not except Putin himself,” said one attendee, branding Putin a ‘dictator.’
“[Russia Today] spreads lies, undermines democracy, undermines freedom of speech, and it’s a weapon in the hybrid war that Russia is waging against Ukraine, and it’s a weapon that costs lives,” another protester said about the Russian state-funded television network.
The protest came as Russian troop numbers continue to grow near the Ukrainian border.
Ukraine’s foreign minister has said that the current build-up of Russian troops at the country’s borders is not enough to launch a full-scale offensive.
Russia has denied accusations it is gathering forces at the border with the intention of invading Ukraine.
SOT, Protester: “The protest is about Putin, his aggression, invasion, and occupation of Ukraine, and his potential full-scale invasion which he’s threatening to do, and nobody knows whether he’s going to do it or not except Putin himself, only he knows. He controls it, he’s the dictator, and he has his finger on the button whether he goes in or not. So that’s the reason we’re here.”
SOT, Protester: “We are here today to protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At this very moment 100,000 Russian troops are being amassed at the borders of Ukraine and Russian rhetoric is such that the country can be invaded full-scale at any moment. I’m here also to remind [people] that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has already happened. In 2014, Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula, Crimea, and also invaded the eastern part of the country, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. 14,000 lives have already been lost in this conflict.”
SOT, Protester: “We are at the headquarters of Russia Today which is a state-funded, multi-billion dollar media corporation which spreads disinformation and lies across the world about [the] Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
SOT, Protester: “So we’re here to protest against disinformation, against propaganda that’s been spread by RT, by Russia Today, which is in this building. It’s an organisation which operates in the heart of London, in the capital of the UK. It spreads lies, undermines democracy, undermines freedom of speech, and it’s a weapon in the hybrid war that Russia is waging against Ukraine, and it’s a weapon that costs lives. It’s not just a normal war which is fought with troops, with guns and bullets, it’s a war which involves information.”
SOT, Protester: “Ukrainians were protesting at Downing Street for 8 years and we were asking for one voice from the West, we were talking about Swift, we were talking about strict sanctions, we were talking about a lot of stuff for 8 years and now what? We’ve given Putin 8 more years to prepare? We were in Downing Street from 2014, and back in 2019 we were there for the whole year standing every single week standing with a 12-metre banner saying ‘if the last Ukrainian soldier falls, Putin will come for you ladies and gentlemen.’ And what we have nowadays [is the] said reality. And this is true.”
