UK: Shoppers pack London streets on Boxing Day despite Omicron fears

Londoners packed the city’s shopping streets on Sunday to enjoy Boxing Day and holiday sales, despite fears of the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus.
“Everybody wants to buy something on discount, that’s why people don’t care about COVID at this moment,” said a shopper.
“I am aware of the risks insofar, but Christmas is already one time a year, and I want to see the Christmas lights and go do shopping,” explained another.
Many showed confidence in the COVID safety measures imposed by the UK government and said they feel safe if the citizens comply with the rules.
“I am wearing a mask; it protects me from coronavirus,” said one resident.
Another man stressed: “I am wearing a face mask, and I am triple vaccinated as well, so I think I am as safe as I can be and take all the precautions I can take.”

SOT, Resident: “I do think that COVID is a risk, especially in London, with so many people here, but the life is here in London and we only kind of live once, my family is also over here as well and they would love to see all, the beautiful London, all the nice buildings. I think I won’t be afraid to be out with my family and we are also double vaccinated so I think it’s safe.”

SOT, Resident: “I am here because it’s Boxing Day and I need to buy clothes for next summer guys because summer is close, I am getting in shape for that. There are also people everybody wants to buy something at a discount that’s why people don’t care about COVID at this moment. They got a booster so they are going (inaudible). There is no way I am saying that I don’t care about COVID, I know there is some risk there and we are still in a pandemic but we also need to enjoy our life. It’s the spirit of Christmas after all!”

SOT, Resident: “Despite the risk of catching COVID, I am wearing a mask, it protects me from coronavirus. however, If if didn’t wear the mask I wouldn’t be here. What’s the point? It’s Boxing Day, only once.”

SOT, Resident: “I am out here shopping today because i feel like I am taking all the precautions I need to, I am wearing a face mask and I am triple vaccinated as well, so I think I am as safe as I can be and take all the precautions I can take.”

SOT, Resident: “I am aware of the risks insofar, but Christmas is already one time a year, and I want to see the Christmas lights and go do shopping.”
