Ukraine: Army conducts drills near Crimea amid tensions

Ukraine’s military conducted tactical exercises in the southern Kherson region near the border with Crimea, the country’s Defence Ministry’s said on Friday.

The troops practised defending seashores and tank-hazardous land areas while countering an offensive operation, according to the ministry.

In addition, the soldiers also carried out firing of BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers and performed suppressing and destroying firepower, armoured vehicles and manpower of the simulated enemy.

The ministry said the forces used information provided by artillery reconnaissance as well as instructions received from reconnaissance drone operators during the exercise.

The exercise was aimed at harmonising artillery units, improving personnel field skills and enhancing commanders’ practical skills in units’ management, a statement from the ministry concluded.

The drills come amid heightened tensions between Kiev and Moscow. Ukraine and the USA have repeatedly warned that Russia is planning to attack its western neighbour, a claim dismissed by the Kremlin.
