A hostage siege on board a bus in Ukraine has ended peacefully after the gunman gave himself up to police.

The man surrendered following a phone call with the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who then urged people to watch an animal rights documentary.

Following their 15 minute exchange, Zelenskiy posted a video on his Facebook page, encouraging the nation to watch a 2005 American animal rights documentary called ‘Earthlings’.

According to the Ukrainian media, the hostage-taker, an animal rights activist, identified by police as Maksim Krivosh, had made this demand in exchange for his surrender.

Shortly after Zelenskiy posted the video, the assailant gave himself up to the security forces.

None of the hostages were injured and the hijacker was detained.
