Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured Kiev has no plans to reject the path to NATO membership during a press conference held with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday.

According to Zelensky, membership in the Alliance would contribute to Ukrainian security and territorial integrity. Despite this, he clarified that the decision regarding Kiev entry not only depends on the country’s yearning.

“Maybe, the question of open doors [to NATO] is indeed just a story for us, like a dream, just a signal, where we are going, and when we will be there - no one knows, not only Ukraine but even some NATO members. That’s why I think we should move on the path we’ve chosen.”

Several countries have urged their citizens to leave Ukraine and issued travel warnings, citing concerns of potential armed conflict in the country.

In a published announcement on Saturday, following a call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden on the ongoing tensions in Ukraine, the White House warned that Biden was clear that a ‘further invasion of Ukraine’ by Russia would be responded to ‘decisively’ with ‘swift and severe costs’ for Moscow.
