Thousands of jellyfish filled the waters near the pier at the Odessa Sea Station, Ukraine’s largest sea port, as seen in drone footage on Sunday.

According to local media reports, almost all the jellyfish in the water belong to a group of root-mouthed jellyfish (Rhizostomae). Their representatives are the largest in the Black and Mediterranean Seas. Some individuals can reach up to 30 centimeters in diameter and have any color - from milky to blue with a reddish tinge.

Such a large number of jellyfish appearing can be due to a small number of fish species eating phyto and zooplankton. Thus, jellyfish actively eat plankton, which contributes to their rapid growth and reproduction, according to environmentalists.

In the autumn of last year, a similar situation was observed in Odessa.
