Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBU) said on Monday that former president Petro Poroshenko had “refused” to testify in the treason case against him.

Speaking outside the SBU offices in Kiev, Poroshenko said “I am definitely not going to be part of this show. I will not participate and give any testimony because it is very similar to the situation if someone was called to work with the NKVD (People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs of the USSR) in 1937,” Poroshenko stated.

Poroshenko faces treason charges over his alleged involvement in financing separatist fighters in eastern Ukraine via the illegal sale of coal during his time in office. The ex-president says the charges are politically motivated.
