Ukraine: US, UK order diplomats' families to leave Kiev

The United States and the UK have ordered their diplomats’ families in Kiev to leave the country amid heightening tensions on the Ukraine-Russia border. Footage from Monday shows the diplomatic missions in the Ukrainian capital.

The US Department of State said the American embassy in Kiev would stay open, adding the news wouldn’t affect “commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to Russia’s deeply troubling build-up of forces in and around Ukraine.”
The UK Foreign Office also announced on Monday it was withdrawing some embassy staff and their relatives from Ukraine due to the “growing threat from Russia.”

Kiev criticised the “premature” withdrawal of the diplomats’ families.
“Respecting the right of foreign states to ensure the security of their diplomatic missions, we consider such a step by the American side to be premature and a manifestation of excessive caution,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said.

The US and its allies have warned that Russia is planning an invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied the accusations, describing the claims as groundless attempts to instil “hysteria.”
