Ukraine: 'We are afraid for the kids' - Civilians evacuate to Russia from DPR

Residents of Gorlovka, self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), gathered at the railway station on Sunday, awaiting the evacuation to Russia by trains.

“I am not evacuating myself, but my grandson. I have a big family. Yesterday I sent other grandkids away. We are afraid for the kids, so we send them away,” said Yury, a Gorlovka local.

The man also explained why he chose to stay, “I am staying because I can’t leave the city behind. I am working at a plant that supplies heat, and I can’t leave people in the cold.”

On Friday, the heads of the self-proclaimed republics announced the mass evacuation from the DPR and LPR to Russia.

Kiev and the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics have accused each other of ceasefire violations and shelling in recent days. The OSCE special monitoring mission reported 591 breaches of the ceasefire regime in the DPR and 975 in the LPR on February 18.
