UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres gave his remarks in New York City on Friday regarding the ongoing Taliban offensive in Afghanistan.
He warned that the country was ‘spinning out of control’ as “Afghanistan is in the throes of yet another chaotic and desperate chapter.”
He also said that civilians will pay the highest price if the fighting continues, “I call on all parties to take heed of the conflict’s heavy toll and it’s devastating impact on civilians. They all must do more to protect civilians. I remind all parties of their legal and moral obligation to take all measures to protect civilians.”
He also called on the Taliban to halt their offensive and to negotiate in good faith at the Doha meetings set between representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban.
The recent Taliban offensive has been triggered by the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal from the country. As of today, according to estimates, the Taliban controls more than 60% of the country.
