UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called on the international community to ‘grow up’ and ‘listen to the warning of the scientists’ as he addressed climate change at the UN General Assembly in New York City on Wednesday.
Johnson called on his counterparts to “commit to very substantial reductions by 2030” in carbon emissions and listed four areas of commitment.
“Coal, cars, cash and trees. It is very simple”, the Prime Minister said.
He stressed, “the whole experience of the COVID pandemic is that the way to fix the problem is through science and innovation, the breakthroughs, the investments that are made possible by capitalism and free markets,” and noted such changes are possible without economic losses quoting UK statistics with greenhouse emissions cut by 44 percent in the last 30 years and the GDP increased by 78 percent.
At the same time, he called on international financial institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank to cooperate with governments to ensure a smooth shift for their economies during the transition.
