UN Leader at Rafah Border with Gaza as Humanitarian Situation Becomes Desperate

UN Secretary-General António Guterres took the unprecedented step of visiting the Rafah crossing into Gaza in person today.

He said the world must work together to get aid into Gaza.

The visit comes as supplies of water, food and fuel in Gaza are reaching desperate new lows.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced due to the Israeli bombardment of Gaza following the attack on Israel on 7th October.

Since Hamas launched that surprise attack, Israel has effectively cut off all supplies to Gaza.

There has been mounting pressure from the international community and the UN to end that blockade.

One of the only feasible ways to get aid into Gaza is through the Rafah crossing with Egypt.

But that crossing remains closed.
As the humanitarian situation worsens by the day, this queue of lorries carrying vital aid sits unable to move on the Egyptian side of the border.
