UN: Russia spox asks for "serious guarantees" that NATO will not expand

A Russian representative to the United Nations asked for ‘serious guarantees’ from the United States and NATO that the alliance would not expand, during a press conference at the UN’s headquarters in New York City, on Tuesday, amid tensions at the border with Ukraine.
“We want serious guarantees from the United States first and foremost, and from NATO. We were patient for quite a long time,” said Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN. “After the Soviet Union ceased to exist, there were oral promises, oral guarantees from leaders of Western countries that NATO will not be expanding.”
He added, “it’s very close to our border. We didn’t come to NATO borders; NATO came to us. That’s why we have absolutely legitimate reasons to be worried about it. We promote the principle of indivisible security, that the security of one state cannot be ensured at the expense of the security of the others.”
Commenting on the recent build-up of troops along the border between Russia and the Ukraine, Polyanskiy said: “This is our sovereign territory, and we have the right to move the troops, to place the troops, to conduct exercises.”
Russia announced it would withdraw troops from the Ukrainian border after months of heightened tensions. Russia has repeatedly expressed concerns over NATO expanding and has called on NATO to provide it with security guarantees.

It is the core idea of many documents that were signed at the beginning or in the middle of the 90s. So, we want to come back to this spirit.”
