Members of the Bundestag expressed increasing concern on Wednesday about Russia’s attitude towards Ukraine’s border situation.
“We respect Russia’s security interests, that’s why NATO does not station permanent troops in Eastern Europe, that’s why the accession process with Georgia and Ukraine will not have a very rapid outcome at the moment, but vice versa, Russia also has to respect the security interests and territorial integrity of Ukraine and has to know that if Russia crosses this border militarily it will have to pay a high price for it,” said Green Party MP Jurgen Trittin.
Meanwhile FPD representative Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, “heartily invited” Russia to discuss issues of concern and interest through international organisations, making it clear that the West is “united” and that Russia’s actions “would have dramatic consequences for the Russian Federation, and that must be made clear to everyone in the Kremlin.”
The discussion comes after weeks after reports of Russia’s continued military build-up on its borders with Ukraine.
The US has warned about a possible invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, despite President Vladimir Putin’s denial of any intention to invade his neighbouring country.
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Amira Mohamed Ali, Linke party MP (German): “On foreign policy, how Germany is faring here is of great international importance we are currently living conflicts within Europe, in particular, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is causing us great concern. But instead of efforts to negotiate, we hear from our foreign ministry, above all, toughen (tones). But what our country needs in terms of foreign policy are politicians who once again consistently places dialogue and pressure at the centre of its foreign strategy in the spirit of Willy Brandt, not in the spirit of Joschka Fischer.”
SOT, Jurgen Trittin, Green party MP (German): “We respect the security interests of Russia that is reason why NATO does not station permanent troops in Eastern Europe. That is the reason why at the moment the accession process with Georgia and Ukraine will not have a very quick result, but vice versa, Russia also has to respect the security interests and the territorial integrity of Ukraine and it has to know that if Russia crosses this border militarily it will have to pay a high price for it, we are counting on a political solution and economic solution we do not want a military solution, but there will be a high price to pay.”
SOT, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, FDP MP (German): “Russia has national interests that is legitimate, and it wants to strengthen its security wants to discuss security and cooperation in Europe for this we have an organisation. The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe Russia is heartily invited to bring up any of the topics it wants to discuss there. Ladies and gentlemen, let me say one thing in conclusion. I find it correct that we are in constant discussion with the Americans and the NATO allies, both the large partners and the smaller partners. The situation in Europe must not change dramatically in the next year to the detriment of Ukraine, Russia must be aware of one thing, the West is united here, and such a development would have dramatic consequences for the Russian Federation, and that must be clear to everyone in the Kremlin.”
SOT, Rolf Mutzenich, SPD MP (German): “Democracies can best keep peace among themselves. And democracies can also bring the best domestic peace to others, and especially in a world that obviously no longer adheres to rules and international law, we must also name those responsible. And yes, there is no doubt that Russia has broken the rules and international law and that with the occupation of Crimea violating international law, a divisive element has returned to Europe and therefore, Russia cannot dictate the conditions for the free countries in Europe, which is called subordination. “
