Russia is seeking to boost its economic sovereignty instead of building a “fortress” and “living behind fortress walls,” President Vladimir Putin said in Moscow on Tuesday at VTB Capital’s investment conference titled Russia Calling.

Going on to discuss Russia’s foreign policy, Putin said Moscow wanted to improve ties with Kiev instead of escalation in relations.

“The point is to improve relations to create a more equitable, sustainable development and to take into account the interests of all participants in international activities.”

He added that Russia will respond to security threats from Western countries and Ukraine if necessary.
