A spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concerns over the escalating violence and the recently instated state of emergency in Ethiopia, on Wednesday, in New York City.
“The Secretary-General reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, unrestricted humanitarian access to deliver urgent life-saving assistance, and an inclusive dialogue to resolve this crisis and create the foundation for peace and stability throughout the country,” said Farhan Haq, a deputy spokesperson for the secretary-general.
He also voiced concerns of human rights violations from all sides in the ongoing conflict, saying, “the Secretary-General notes the extremely serious findings of the joint Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights-Ethiopian Human Rights Commission investigation released today detailing that all parties to the Tigray conflict have committed violations of international human rights, humanitarian and refugee law.”
The government of Ethiopia announced a nationwide state of emergency on Tuesday as Tigray forces closed in on the capital Addis Ababa.
