Ecuador: Hundreds rally in support of President Lasso in Quito amid state of emergency

Hundreds rallied in Quito on Wednesday in a show of support for President Guillermo Lasso amid a state of emergency declared earlier in the week due to drug violence concerns.
Lasso also made a public appearance and speech in front of a crowd of his supporters.
“Those who want to impose their will with violence, with their aggressiveness, here stands the Ecuadorian people to defend Quito, to defend the capital and tell them that this October they will not be able to set buildings on fire,” said Lasso, in an appeal for his supporters to protect the capital.
The statement was a reference to deadly indigineous-led protests which took place in October 2019, when the government announced a number of austerity measures.
The latest state of emergency, which was declared on Monday, comes at a time of discontent over fuel prices. Trade unions and indigenous groups have called for a protest on Thursday as a response.
