Hundreds of members of Ecuador’s Special Operations Group raided Guayaquil’s Penitenciaría del Litoral early Thursday morning after the riot in which at least 116 inmates died.

The agents searched the facility, smashing walls and ceilings with hammers in order to find and seize evidence.

During a subsequent search, authorities seized three firearms, a hand grenade, 12 sticks of dynamite, 507 projectiles, drugs, 16 mobile phones, and nine handmade sharp weapons.

The National Service of Integral Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI) also reported that 52 people were injured.

According to the authorities, the riot broke out due to “clashes between criminal gangs.”

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso decreed a “state of emergency” throughout the country’s prison system.
