Ecuador Prison Riots: Violent Clashes Involving Gangs and Police Leave 75 Dead

At least 75 inmates have died in violent riots across three prisons in Ecuador.

The fatalities were reportedly the result of fights between rival gangs and an escape attempt.

Edmundo Moncayo, Director of Prisons, said that 800 police officers had been deployed to regain control.

Footage posted online appears to show armed officers driving into the detention centres.

Violent unrest started last December after a gang leader died, according to Ecuador National Police.

In a statement, they said groups were clashing in an attempt to gain “criminal leadership” within the prisons.
