Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke on Saturday in the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The minister stated that Russia continued to respect the principles of the UN Charter. However, he said he was concerned that there are “persistent attempts to diminish the UN’s role in resolving the key problems of today.”

“Such attempts are clearly visible in this of the so-called “rule-based order” concept, which the West is persistently introducing into political discourse as opposed to international law,” Lavrov stressed.

Lavrov recalled on the idea of the US to convene a “summit of democracies”, which, according to the minister, would become “a step towards a split of the world community into ‘friends’ and “aliens.”

“This initiative - quite in the spirit of the Cold War - proclaims a new ideological ‘crusade’ against all dissent,” he commented.

At the same time, the head of Russian diplomacy supported the initiative of US President Joe Biden to refuse military methods to reform political systems in other countries, but suggested abandoning other “methods of imposing one’s own development model.” Lavrov hoped to resuscitate the Russian-American dialogue on arms control.

The minister also mentioned issues of cybercrime. He recalled that Russia stands for the creation of universal and transparent agreements within the framework of the UN to ensure international information security. According to Lavrov, both the Internet and the space should remain demilitarised.

“We are all in the same boat. It is in our common interest to make sure that it stays afloat in the waves of global politics. We are different but this must not prevent us from working for the sake of our people and the entire mankind,” Lavrov concluded.
