UNHCR and IOM in touch with Minsk and Warsaw, call for 'urgent resolution' of border situation

A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have been in contact with the Polish and Belarusian governments to find a solution for the migration crisis at the border between both countries, during a briefing at the UN’s headquarters in New York City, on Tuesday.
“The UNHCR along with the International Organization for Migration today said they are alarmed by the latest reports from the Belarus-Poland border the two agencies said that yesterday reports surface of a large group of migrants and refuges among them women and children on the Belarus side,” said the secretary-general’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
“The two agencies have been in contact with both governments in Warsaw and Minsk and are calling for an urgent resolution of the situation and immediate and unhindered access to the group of people seeking help.”
In recent weeks, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has been accused by the European Union of orchestrating the arrival of migrants at the Polish border in response to EU sanctions against his country, an accusation which he has denied.

SOT, Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General: “For its part the UN Children’s Fund says its deeply concerned about the dire situation by asylum-seeking children in Europe and its borders UNICEF says reports of children living in appalling conditions being push back or detain on the Easters borders of the EU or shocking in a direct violation of the convention of the Rights of the Child.”
