Heavy rains hit Montevideo causing serious damage to irregular settlements on the outskirts of the city, as seen on Monday in Nuevo Comienzo shows.

The storm also cut electric power throughout the country after more than 120 poles fell, leaving more than 25,000 people without electricity.

“Here is the first time that this has happened as such extent, the wind seemed to destroy everything,” explained Dinora Barrera, a resident of the settlement.

The rainfall registered on Sunday in just one hour exceeded the historical monthly average of the Uruguayan capital.

According to official sources, no deaths or injuries were reported.

SOT, Dinora Barrera, local resident (Spanish): “It started to rain more or less between 02:00 or 02:30. Around 03:00 we had to get up, because we have the walls affected, and the wind lifted them and the water sweeped in. We had to hang from the ceiling because otherwise it would shake.”
