Intense discussions are underway in Geneva as the United States tries to negotiate an end to a hostage situation. Russia is threatening Ukrainian security if the US and NATO don’t meet their demands. Russia said during the talks that it was “absolutely mandatory” that Ukraine “never, never, ever” become a NATO member. Also adding that if NATO did not roll back its presence in Eastern Europe, the entire continent of Europe would face unspecified consequences. The United States said that it will not allow anyone to change NATO’s open door policy and will not stand by if Russia chooses to change international borders with force. While the talks are deadlocked, there is some optimism. The US proposed banning intermediate-range missiles in Europe and proposed potential limits on the size and scope of its military exercises. Russia said that they felt that the talks were very professional, deep, and concrete. But just like a relationship on the rocks, it could all fall apart tomorrow if someone uses the wrong punctuation.
