As Tensions rise in Eastern Europe between Ukraine and Russia, Russia has issued a series of public demands to NATO and the United States And let’s just say. They’re kind of delusional. And perhaps that is intentional as Russia seeks additional justification for a potential invasion of Ukraine. Here’s some of what Russia wants: An end to NATO military activity in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. It wants a VETO over NATO membership. Any deployment of NATO troops in Eastern Europe needs Russian approval. NATO troops can no longer be deployed in Poland, the Baltics, or the Czech Republic. It also wants NATO and Russia to sign an agreement that they don’t see each other as adversaries. These demands come as Russia has 75% of its battalion tactical groups on the border with Ukraine. Some have suggested that Russia is negotiating in bad faith so they can claim that they tried diplomacy but it didn’t work out, which is why they had to resort to military force. Others have suggested that Russia and the US could reach some sort of compromise when they meet in January, but that the current public demands are simply unacceptable for NATO. It could be a long winter.
