‘US Capitol Evacuated as Fire Sparks Security Scare Ahead of Biden Inauguration’

The US Capitol complex was evacuated during a rehearsal for the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden after witnesses spotted smoke rising above the building.

Capitol police acted out of “an abundance of caution” when ordering the evacuation, although it transpired the fire was in fact several blocks away.

Security is tight in Washington DC after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, with close to 25,000 National Guard troops deployed around the city.

The inauguration rehearsal has been temporarily suspended.
