Joe Biden has called for unity in the wait for a final result in the US presidential election, but acknowledged the country’s deep divisions would take time to heal.

With no clear winner in the race to the White House, the former Vice President counseled patience until “all the votes” are counted.

A record turnout, as well as a huge number of postal votes has meant final tallies were delayed in key states, but with a widening lead Biden said he had begun to make preparations to take over the presidency.
