Christian believers gathered in prayer at a damaged Baptist church in Mayfield, Kentucky, on Sunday after deadly tornadoes wreaked havoc on the area in recent days.

Several local churches were badly damaged in the incident, with local residents having begun recovery work.

Tornadoes ripped through six states in the Midwest and the South on Friday and Saturday, causing dozens of fatalities, and destroying at least 1,000 homes.

Kentucky governor Andy Beshear told a press conference that the powerful storms were ‘the most severe tornado event in Kentucky’s history,’ leaving more than 56,000 without power with at least 100 feared dead.

According to Beshear, Graves County, including the town of Mayfield, suffered the most destruction.
